The most important part of the adoption process for any expectant mother is choosing the adoptive family. This is your opportunity to shape your child’s future. Choose a reputable, licensed adoption coordinator who listens to you and understands what is essential to you for your child.
Many couples are hoping to adopt. The right family is out there, and we’re confident you will find them.
How Are Adoptive Couples Approved?
A reputable adoption agency requires potential adoptive couples to undergo an extensive approval process. Here are a few things they must do:
- All couples are required to have a Home Study. This ensures their home and other family members are ready to receive a baby.
- Have extensive background checks, including criminal and sexual abuse and fingerprinting.
- Provide medical and financial records.
- Provide referrals from friends, coworkers, and family members.
- Answer questionnaires about their history, family, mental and physical health, and marriage.
- Create a family bio with photos and letters to potential birth parents.
What Should I Look For?
As you consider your child’s future, think about what’s most important to you. Here are some questions to consider:
- Where do I want my child to live? In the city? On a farm?
- Do I want my child to be the oldest or have other siblings immediately?
- Is their religion important? Ethnicity? Income?
- What about their lifestyle? Do they travel? Have hobbies?
- Are they willing to meet me and continue a relationship?
- Do they come from a big or small extended family?
What’s essential to you should be important to them.
Can I Meet Them Before Deciding?
Most adoption agencies today set up a meeting before your baby is born to assure you that the couple you’ve chosen is a good match. By meeting them early, you can begin building a relationship right away.
The potential adoptive couple will want to support you. As you prepare for delivery, you can include the couple in the birth or arrange for them to meet your baby later.
As always, you are free to change your mind anytime until you sign legal papers.
Where Do I Begin?
We cannot place your baby for adoption at Grace Women’s Care Center, but we can provide referrals to reputable adoption coordinators in our area. We encourage you to talk to several to find the one that meets your needs.
A reputable adoption coordinator charges an expectant mother nothing for their services. They should thoroughly explain the adoption process so you know what to expect and never pressure or manipulate you to choose adoption.
