For many women, having an abortion can be emotionally challenging. You may feel uncertain about who to turn to, especially if you are experiencing trauma following an abortion.

It is important to remember that you are not alone! There is help available to walk you through this healing journey.

Does Abortion Cause Emotional Problems?

The National Institutes of Health states that for women who have had an abortion, “abortion is consistently associated with elevated rates of mental illness compared to women without a history of abortion.” They also say,  “the abortion experience directly contributes to mental health problems for at least some women.”

Women may associate their abortions with trauma. Following a traumatic event, someone may experience:

  • Denial
  • Shock
  • Strained relationships
  • Unpredictable emotions
  • Flashbacks
  • Physical symptoms (headaches, nausea)

It is imperative that you seek the help and support you deserve if you believe you are experiencing any of the symptoms described above.

Speaking with a trusted professional will help you to sort through these feelings and find healing. At Grace Women’s Care Center, we provide a 24-hour Helpline or free appointments to discuss your experience. We want to walk this path with you and provide a listening ear.
